The food was excellent and you will know by our ages we have eaten a lot of meals all over the World - you are up there with the talented chefs. I am sure you are making a great success of your restaurant, and I hope we might visit you again when we are next in Devon. 25th January 2012 Dear Karla and Ashley, we would just like to say how enjoyable our stay was with you and the wonderful meal on new years eve. you made our honeymoon at 22 mill street a real treat nothing was too much trouble. we look forward to seeing you again in the year at one of your events. yours sincerly lisa and jason searle x 19th December 2011 We had the most wonderful, memorable meal at your restaurant on Tuesday. Thank you so much for making my birthday so special. The food was spectacular, amazing flavours and great attention to detail. Everything was perfect, even down to the homemade butter and rolls. The setting is delightful, cosy lounge, superb restaurant and beautifully laid table, with a view of the moor thrown in for good measure. We took pictures of all the dishes we had and have shown them to everyone at home; they were much admired so you may get some more visitors from Kent if they are in the area. 17th December 2011 Just wanted to write and say thank you for a fabulous night last night, the food was excellent and the welcome was superb.

We had a lovely time staying at 22 Mill Street, due especially to the resident manager, Sara Lock, who handled her various tasks with skill, charm and efficiency. The town of Chagford was quaint and a fine place to begin hikes throughout Dartmoor National Park and to tour Castle Drogo. We were able to park for free on the street. June 2011 "This is a real gem! Highly reccommended!"
June 2011 “First class service matched by food and accommodation” Lovely welcoming staff. Room was very spacious and had lots of special touches (bath robes, Molton Brown toiletries, proper coffee and teas, DVD player and dvds). The food was lovely if rather rich and the service was superb. Great night's sleep followed by a lovely light breakfast. Only negatives were the traffic noise in the morning and noisy plumbing, but would definitely go again. 27th May 2011 "the hostess was a big asset to the restaurant" Having read all the reviews this was a 'must visit' restaurant and a booking was made a week in advance for a Friday evening over the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. The restaurant is in Chagford, a very picturesque little place on Dartmoor. The restaurant itself is attractive and has a relatively small number of covers. On arrival we were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated in a waiting area and served with drinks whilst we looked over the menus'. The place was very relaxed and we were made to feel very welcome and the hostess was a big asset to the restaurant. June 2011 "Very welcoming and would definitely come back" High quality restaurant with good accommodation 06/06/11 "Dining par excellance" Chagford is a small place so it's all the more surprising to find such a noteworthy restaurant there. April 2011 "Warm and Friendly place to stay" We stayed for one night, would definately visit again, very friendly staff couldn`t do enough for you, very good food in a relaxed atmosphere, would recommend a visit. 28/05/11 "A delightful experience" A charming but small restaurant, we were quickly seated and served the aperitifs of our choice. All 3-courses were excellent as was the wine and the service. We had a delightful evening and look forward to returning in the future. 16/05/11 “A really enjoyable Easter break” We arrived late evening on the 21st April to be greeted by a lovely smile and that set the tone for the weekend, our room was a tad on the small side but it had all the mod cons including a good shower, sometimes difficult to find in country locations, the plumbing was a bit noisy, but to us thats country living, and it certainly didn't affect our stay.
A friendly welcome even though we arrived a day early. Luckily one of their two rooms was available. The young woman who acted as receptionist, barman, waitress and room service was delightful. Excellent bar; the receptionist/waitress/bary mixed a good Martini, and the Prosecco was delicious. Very few other guests in the dining room that night, but cannot think why since the food was elegant, thoughtful, with original touches and full of flavour. Lovely amuse bouche, homemade bread and butter. Good chats with the enthusiastic young chef. Worth a detour. It is a bit off the beaten track but it well situated for walks in the area and for touring. Everything was just quirky enough to be interesting. 05/05/11 - "I Loved 22 Mill St Restaurant"
30/04/11 -"Great little find- would recommend" Great B&B, great location, really nice food and very welcoming. The service here was great, as was the food and wine. Probably the best accomodation in Chagford. The food, service and wine selections rival Gidleigh Park. 23/04/11 - "A fabulous short stay" Staying only for one night on a Late Rooms deal we were made to feel both so welcome and so comfortable. Sarah (the Manager) is extremely attentive and settled us quickly into this very homely yet stylish restaurant/hotel. There are only two bedrooms and we were the only guests but the rooms are plush and contemporary. The decor throughout exudes class and 22 Mill Street clearly does very well on the food...it was too rich for us (£36 for two courses) but if you're planning something special then No.22 would be ideal. My wife and I are going back in August to stay there and also at the sister hotel, Brown's in Tavistock, on a deal organised through Sarah. Brown's is larger and cater's for accommodation far more than Mill Street. The breakfast although very nice, could be more varied. Museli only on the continental option and as others' have stated £12 for a full English is crazy...sometimes you can get ahead of yourself where breakfast is concerned, Tetley tea and Frosties needs to be an option too! Our Late Rooms deal was £69 including the continental breakfast so be aware the prices do vary and I'm sure if you rang direct No.22 would be able to price match. A fabulous short stay in superb surroundings, the village is quaint with some great pubs (four? to be exact within two minutes walk from No.22) and an ideal romantic get-away. The parking isn't good (on the road outside) but we managed to park easily. As I've said we're already booked to go back in August-I suppose that's recommendation enough... 21/04/11 - Wonderful Hospitality Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality both yesterday and today. You helped to make a short stay a really memorable one! 16/04/11 - "Such a lovely meal" I would like to extend our thanks, for such a lovely meal. What a beautiful restaurant and excellent service. 15/04/11 - "A perfect evening!" Such a tremendous welcome and the food was of course absolutely scrummy! (We started with a lovely sunny one hour walk around Chagford under Sarah’s guidance.) Altogether a perfect evening! 08/12/10 - Caroline & George Norrie Thank you for a sensational meal- Flowers and Card from Flying Flowers November, 2010 - E Floyd, Laterooms "A great find" My husband and I had a wonderful stay here, the staff and owners were so friendly and gave us a free upgrade which wasn't necessary but a lovely treat! The food was amazing and I would reccomend a stop here overnight and if you can't stay overnight definatly have dinner. The chef is great and we met him as well! I do hope to return again. 14/11/20 - Anonymous, Toptable 22 Mill Street, Chagford We had a very enjoyable meal there. The food was top quality, and the service was very friendly. 07/11/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review 29/10/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review We have been going to 22 Mill Street in Chagford since it was bought by Browns Hotel Tavistock. The food is original, well cooked and perfectly presented. The atmosphere depends to large extent on who else is eating there as the small dining area can be a bit noisy as there are no curtains or carpets. 29/10/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review Charming small restaurant with very good, delicate cooking, and friendly efficient service. Dinner last week was seared scallops with oriental spices, followed by local venison, spiced red cabbage and parsnips, all excellent 21/10/10 - Ashley, Booking.com Our stay at 22 Mill Street was just wonderful, the staff where so nice and couldn't do enough to help. The food was out of this world I recommend it to everyone, it's an experience you shouldn't miss! 10/10/10 - Anonymous, Toptable 22 Mill Street is a great venue for a Saturday night for two. The food was exceedingly tasty and very well presented and the service attentive without being intrusive. We will definately book again when we next visit Devon. 9/10/10 - FL, Toptable Couldn't fault our lunch at 22 Mill Street Chagford. Pleasant cosy surroundings with friendly service and very good value for excellent 3 courses costing £21.95 per head. Can definitely recommend. Will return. 21/09/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review The start of our stay couldn't really have got off to a worse start as the shower in our room was broken and emitting all sorts of foul substances but the way in which we were treated was absolutely first class. Obviously something like this is out of the control of the hotel and when there are only a couple of rooms, you can't really just shift the guests into a new one! September, 2010 - Timothy, 22millst.com Fantastic place. Small and intimate without being intrusive. Stylish and smart 1/09/10 - Anonymous (France) , Booking.com Lovely hotel/restaurant located in a lovely village. The staff is very friendly. If you want to discover this part of England or English countryside, if you enjoy nice food, this is definitely the place to stay 23/08/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review I went recently with my partner and two friends having first looked at trip advisor reviews of this and the other noted restaurants in the area. I eat out a lot and have to say that this was best meal I have had in years. All of us were delighted with everything we ate. On top of the spectacular food, the service was informal but efficient and charming - exactly as I would want it. A meal at 22 Mill Street will not be cheap but the overall experience makes it unquestionably good value. I could not recommend it highly enough. August, 2010 - Claire E, Laterooms I had a lovely stay at the hotel. I can't fault it. The owner was lovely and helpful and the room was very comfortable 19/08/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review We stayed on the strength of the restaurant and were not disappointed. The food was absolutely lovely and with the room very good value. The rooms are a decent size and beautifully kitted out with DVDs, magazines etc. Bedding was fabulous quality as were the toiletries. It's a tiny hotel which I normally would feel like I was imposing however we were made to feel so very welcome by fabulous hosts. The breakfast was one of the best that I can remember. It's worth a trip to Chagford just for the restaurant. The only downside is that the plumbing in the en suite is very loud. 03/08/10 - Rachel Healey As we didn't see you when we left yesterday, I wanted to write to say how much Jon and I enjoyed our stay at 22 Mill St. If it wasn't for the distance we would certainly be back to your restaurant on a regular basis! Kind regards, 2/08/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights last week. We were looking for somewhere special to use as base while spending a few days walking in the surrounding area, and we definitely found it! 28/07/10 - Colin B, Laterooms Stayed for 2 nights. We enjoyed our stay in Chagford. 22 Mill Street was very welcomimg with friendly and helpful staff. Our room was up to expectations, the only exception being the slightly noisy pump in the shower room. 23/07/10 - Lady Gibbs
26/07/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review A very elegant, smart and impressive restaurant tucked away in the main highstreet. I booked a table here for my partner's birthday as we were staying locally over the weekend. We were greeted by the front of house manager who was extremely professional and couldn't do enough for us. After being shown to a small seating area/lounge we were given menu's and brought our drinks and pre dinner h'orderves. The menu is somewhat limited but the quality and thinking behind each individual dish is immediately obvious. Both my partner and I chose the Taster menu, which was very good. Produce was fresh, full of flavour and cooked brilliantly. Service was sharp and the restaurant had a fantastic intimate feel - just six tables. Dinner was brilliant although expensive, but I think you most definitely get what you pay for. The staff really know the menu and can answer any questions, from where every ingredient has been sourced to the best wines and ports to accompany every course of your meal. A brilliant restaurant for a special occassion. One of the nicest places I have eaten at for a long time. 8/07/10 - Victoria Carter-Johnson Thanks for a lovely meal again last night, I really love your restaurant experience and have been raving again about what a lovely time we have had. Your restaurant is a little known gem and I am telling anyone who will listen how great a dining experience it is. See you again soon no doubt 28/06/10 - Nicholas Shaw The room was good, only the plumbing was noisy, the hotel was very friendly and the food was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble, easy and very professional. Chagford is a beautiful town, with great pubs and walks and the organic food cafe is worth a visit. 22 Mill Street is ideally located and a lovely place. Will go back again without doubt. 20/06/10 - Tripadvisor.co.uk review 12/06/10 - Steve & Mary Jane "The food was excellant" 11/06/10 - Elizabeth I found out on the morning of my birthday my other half had arranged for dinner and to stay over at 22, Mill Street. We had a lovely time the food was just out of this world, the breakfast was delicious especially the fruits with yoghurt. The Green Room was very comfortable. It made an excellent birthday treat. Despite the unusual plumbing this has to be the best small hotel I have ever stayed in; overlooking the village green, you wake up feeling refreshed and very chilled. The food is fantastic and definately worth paying a bit extra for the cooked breakfast! The manager and chef are sincere, welcoming and very professional. Lovely area for walking - looking forward to going back! 08/05/10 - Sarah Banks Superb food. Friendly unpretentious service. Highly Recommended. Ate in the restaurant and stayed overnight as a package deal to include three course dinner and continental breakfast. The chef and his wife , were both charming and although they had only been on-site for a couple of weeks seemed very organised and the fact they lived on the premises made it more welcoming. Carla was a great front of house asset and Ashley's cooking was some of the best we've tasted. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would recommend eating here. 06/02/10 - Jen Snelham and Karen Dunford I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for making us feel so welcome when we came to stay on Saturday night. The room was exceptionally warm and cosy and the food was really something else, so much so that now everything we eat pales in comparison! The atmosphere that you have created at 22 Mill St is really amazing and it has become a special place to us. Thank you so much, we will definitely be back again. 22/12/09 - Chagford Dental Practice
October 2009 - Chris Chapman I just wanted to write and say how much we all enjoyed my birthday dinner at your restaurant last Thursday - the food was excellent. 21/08/09 - Donna Merriman The attention that we received from everyone was excellent and the breakfasts were divine. The room was wonderful with quality extras. We were able to have a wonderful meal when we arrived and the weekend will be one that will stay with us for a long time. Thanks to all of the staff that made the stay truly pleasurable. July 2009 - H Roy Relaxing - We were made to feel very welcome at 22 Mill Street and would like to thank both John for making it such a pleasent stay. The food was excellent! It was so relaxing after our hectic wedding week. The room was well decorated and "spacious" as it was advertised as and had a wonderful plasma screen TV and view over the bowling green. We booked our break with meals included which made it a reasonable price for a treat . As this is a restaurant "With Rooms" there is no public bar but the staff are only too happy to provide what you need. Try their sister restaurant, Brown's at Tavistock. May 2009 - Mcdonald Sadie What a wonderful experience. We had the warmest of welcomes, the room was simple but very stylish (large flatscreen TV, Molton Brown toiletries, top class bed linen) and the evening meal was out of this world - huge compliments to the young but very talented chef. 20/07/09 - Peter Fieliding May I take the opportunity to thank you and all of your staff for making my daughters stay at the weekend very enjoyable. We will sometime in the future be revisiting the area and when we do we will be contacting you again. We will also give your details to our friends and family.
20/05/09 - Sandra and Ashley Peet 09/06/09 - Paul Carter Dear Sir / Madam I look forward to hearing from you.
RR8 - 27/03/09 - 22 Mill St 01/03/09 - Richard Thank you both so very much for the truly wonderful meal and evening that we had at 22 Mills Street last night!! My chocolate pudding was literally the best that I have ever tasted! Your staff were truly delightful and gave us a tremendous welcome. Many, many more thanks and more congratulations on all that you have achieved there. With every good wish from us both Julia Searight - 28/02/09 Thank you all SO much for our wonderful meal at Mill Street last night “ what a treat! Delicious food, lovely restaurant and delightful staff! Chagford looks sweet and I shall look forward to going there again in daylight. Drive back over the moor was fun “ quite hairy at times with sudden narrow bridges and sheep on the road, eyes glinting in the headlights: all part of a memorable evening! Thank you again. All good wishes, Paul and Trish 02/01/09 Have just stopped over at 22 Mill street for one night after spending New Year in Cornwall. I had read a few reviews before booking and on the basis of these my expectations were high. After a brief tour around the perfect little village of Chagford my wife and I were looking forward to some fine food as promised by the reviews we had read. My wife, being vegetarian, has not always had the best of luck while dining out, even at some of the more reputable restaurants in the country. No such problem here. The whole meal, from start to finish, was a delight to our tastebuds and along with a very reasonably priced bottle of Pinot Noir from the wine list we had one of the best restaurant experiences of recent times. The staff were friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was relaxed. After a good nights sleep in one of the two rooms above the restaurant we arose refreshed to a hearty continental breakfast before we took a brisk walk on the frost covered common above Chagford. All in all, a perfect stopover. We will be returning in the near future. Ashley Battye 25/11/08 10 out of 10 - Food both traditional and vegertarian - outstanding. We really enjoyed our stay - Fantastic Food - We cant wait to go back Debbie and Paul, Billington and Thomas 10/11/2008 To John and all the staff at 22 Mill Street. A big thank you for all your efforts in making our extended celebrations with our family a great success. Everyone had a fantastic evening, the food was superb and the service impeccable. Many thanks Debbie and Paul, Billington and Thomas 10/11/2008 Andy and Ali Caff - 17th October 2008 Dear Josh, we wanted to write and thank you for making our stay last night so enjoyable. You made it clear that if we were in need of anything we were to contact you and our stay was a very relaxed and comfortable one. I had mentioned to you that following several visits to Browns we were expecting a lot of you in the food department and you did not disappoint, both our dinner last night and breakfast this morning were perfect. Thank you again Josh, you are an asset to the company you work for. Devontoday October 2008 From old favourites to continental cuisine with a modern influence, produced by award-winning chefs, there is plenty to please the palate at Browns Hotel in Tavistock, writes Becky Moran. Read more part 1 part 2 part 3 Via Tripadviser - 01/10/08 Fabulous food, fabulous atmosphere, fabulous chef/maitre de. Well worth the travelling F S Copperthwaite 20th Sep 08. Excellent food and a very friendly and efficient service. We stayed for 4 nights and would certainly stay again. Parking in Chagford is limited but this is to be expected in Devon. The town car park is close and safe. The room was spacious and this hotel is to be highly recommended. 18 August 2008 Chris and Joy A one night stop over at 22 Mill Street was the highlight of our holiday. It was hard to fault either the room or the menu and it was certainly one of the best meals we have had for a very long time and we loved the little surprises which came along as well. If we were to try hard to suggest improvement it would be to take a look at the starters. As we avoid foie gras it was disappointing to find that not just one but two of the options included it. This somewhat rather limited our choices. 29 July 2008 - Sarah Larkins A wonderful boutique hotel. All of the staff were genuinely friendly and the food was exceptional. 23 April 2008 - Mr A Lever Just to say "thank you" and complement Joshy on his food and how well he cooked and coped in the absence of the head chef John Hooker. Josh is very good. I have been a regular at 22 Mill Street Restaurant for a number of years and my visit at the weekend was at least my tenth and also the best. The food was some of the best I have eaten in years. Please send me a copy of the menus as I want to write a review to the good food guide. c/o - Bill Roper April 2008 This Restaurant with rooms was tucked away in a very unassuming spot off the high street in Chagford. Nestling in the foothills of the Dartmoor National Park, this place is beautifully located with far reaching views up to the North East Side of the moor. On the day we were there the rain was steady but you could not help but get outside to admire the rusty tint of the moorland as it climbed up towards the torrs. On entry to 22 Mill Street it becomes evident that the owners have clearly made this place functional, clean and classy. We were staying in one of the 2 rooms and it, like the dining room, was full of natural textures like wooden floors, thick set furniture and design led (but functional) fixtures and fittings. Splashes of colour and a reasonable, if bijou, bathroom completed the picture. Very nice indeed. Josh eagerly waited on us for anything we required. Although he was the Sous Chef he also performed the front of house role amply and added to the relaxed feel of the place. The evening meal was excellent. We were surprised by a very nice apperatif and the food to follow did not disappoint. Starters included belly pork and prawn ravioli, both of which were delicious, and mains included duck (superb) and lamb (beautifully cooked and tender). All round a very nice meal topped off with some great local cheeses and a coffee. Klazina 12 Feb 08 This restaurant always was good. The previous correspondent should have gone to a buffet where he/she could have mixed and matched to their heart's content. The previous owner, Duncan Walker, was extremely good and attracted custom from far and wide, but has now sold up and left. My husband and I booked a table for lunch not knowing this but the new owners (apparently from Brown's Hotel in Tavistock) have given their sous shef there his chance and what a success he's making. His name is John Hooker and he is exceptional beyond his years. We spoke to him after our meal and he is is very pleasant and easy going. We were at Gordon Ramsey's in Hospital Road in January and I'd say that in culinary terms 22 Mill Street is not that far away. Our lunch was truly excellent and at a reasonable price - three courses for two including a bottle of wine was under £80. Certainly worth making a detour for. Ashley Leah Jan 2008 Outstanding service and outstanding food. This young chef and his small team are definately working towards their first 'star' and will go far. Excellent room and decor. The Observer, 16 December 2007 Everthing had that reassuring competence. The Pasta on a single raviolo of langoustine flavoured with basil was light and silky, the seafood reassuringly fresh. Seared Foie Gras, one of those things every cook thinks they can do but often can't, was cooked with precision and accompanied by soft cubes of Sauternes jelly. A main course of Venison, fresh off Exmoor, showed the same quiet skill: solid slices, a velvet red at their heart, draped across roasted cepes and a crisp rosti. It spoke of someone cooking with their appetite rather than their head. The Observer review in full 18/12/2007 Dear John, 05/12/2007 My friend and I had a stunning lunch today and we just wanted to say thank you to the talented chef and wish you well in the future. We are certainly looking forward to coming back!
