An exhibition by Dartmoor photographer Simon Williams entitled Sense of Place capturing the landscapes, patterns and details of the land features from 5 March in the sparkling contemporary space of the 22 Mill Street restaurant in Chagford.

Most images have been taken at Devon Wildlife Trust reserves and other wild places around the area.

The work focuses on landscape details (or mini-landscapes) emphasising colour, light, pattern and/or detail containing ‘clues’ giving a suggestion of place, time, weather and season.

The images aim to achieve a feeling rather than a full representation of the place featured with plants and land details often left as ambiguous, encouraging the viewer to think of the image in its own right rather than as a representation of something they are very familiar with.

Scale may be absent, focus may be limited and detail may be missing – a restricted use of colour and texture convey an atmosphere and you are encouraged to look closer and to find a sense of place.

Simons current photography interests stem from his experience as a botanist working for various wildlife trusts and as a geologist and geographer with a love of place and an obsession with detail. Simon often finds himself obsessed with a crack in the pavement and a plant pushing through whilst missing the bigger views that most other people are looking at!

Simon has worked as a freelance photographer for newspapers, for cultural organisations and wildlife charities as well as photographing Dartmoor businesses and landscapes for many years. He is a photographic Member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen – the regions leading contemporary crafts organisation.

A major exhibition of his new work entitled 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89 mathematics and nature features at the Ice House, Holland Park, Kensington, London from 15 to 30 August 2010.
